Discobolus,
Sydney Olympic Park
We are dedicated to the conservation of the Discobolus public artwork monument and its link to Hellenic Australian cultural heritage at Sydney Olympic Park.
We support the three values of Olympism - Excellence, Respect and Friendship. They constitute the foundation on which the Olympic movement builds its activities to promote sport, culture and education with a view to building a better world.
We acknowledge the Wangal People of the Eora Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which the Discobolus Monument stands at Sydney Olympic Park. We recognise their enduring connection to the lands, waters, and culture of this area, and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.
Discobolus
A symbolic tribute to Hellenic-Australian connections, the Discobolus monument is a public artwork installation representing the fusion of Greek and Australian landscapes. It was dedicated on the site of Stockroute Park to stand as a permanent fixture within Sydney Olympic Park.
This modern masterpiece is the work of well-known artist-curator and academic Robert Owen.
It elegantly blends contemporary aesthetics with classical Greek influences, acting as a profound link between the spirit of ancient Greece and the legacy of the modern Olympic movement.
Our organisation is firmly committed to the conservation of this landmark. Through our work, we ensure that both its creative integrity and historical importance are preserved for the appreciation of future generations.
Sydney Olympic Park
Master Plan 2050
As it stands, recent adoption of the Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2050, the Stockroute Park site is at risk of redevelopment and the Discobolus Monument subject to relocation within the Sydney Olympic Park precinct.
Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) acknowledges the generosity of the Greek community, the value of the Discobolus Monument and its link to Olympic Legacy.
There is no intent to remove the Discobolus monument by SOPA at present. When Stockroute Park is proposed for development, SOPA will consult with the Greek community and other relevant parties to make sure that the Monument is relocated within Sydney Olympic Park in a way that respects the original intent of the artist and Greek community.
The original members of the Hellenic Tribute Inc. and Organising Committee—which dissolved in 2003 following the project's completion—have reunited as the Hellenic Tribute (Reconstituted) Inc. in 2025. This group originally spearheaded the 2000 Discobolus public artwork project in partnership with the NSW Government, NSW Minister for the Olympics and the Olympic Coordination Authority (OCA).
The Hellenic Tribute (Reconstituted) Inc. committee will liaise with SOPA, in consultation with the original donor sponsors and the Greek community, to explore all options for protecting the current site and to evaluate proposed alternative sites.
